Antonio Cromartie and his wife Terricka are expecting twins, in spite of the New York Jets player’s 2011 vasectomy. Terricka now says that a fear of being judged by her husband’s past relationships—he has eight children with a number of different women and two with her—kept her from immediately sending out an excited announcement.
Cromartie reportedly had a vasectomy in 2011, when his tenth child was on the way, but, as our colleagues at Deadspin noted, this man’s fertile power is truly something else. (Via WebMD: “Only 1 to 2 women out of 1,000 will have an unplanned pregnancy in the first year after their partners have had a vasectomy.”) Terricka tells Us Weekly that in October she went to the emergency room after experiencing horrible stomach pains and was told she was expecting twins:
“I really thought I was dreaming, even after, I was just in total disbelief,” she said. “I didn’t even tell Antonio right away because I didn’t think it was possible…. In my head were were good to go… I thought his procedure was the best protection you could have at this point.”
The couple married in 2008 and have two children together, and they’ve reportedly been working on a book and reality show about living as a “blended” family, with children from Cromartie’s past relationships along with their own. Terricka told Us that she wasn’t sure she even wanted to go public with her birth announcement, as she worried they’d be “categorized by a number”:
“To be honest, I’ve gone back and forth about if I wanted to share the news or not,” she tells Us. “All my children are blessings and all of Antonio’s children are blessings, for that matter. It was made to seem that my children weren’t a blessing because they were categorized by a number, and for that reason and that reason alone, I hid both of my [first two] pregnancies with my husband, just so I could enjoy them with those who were really happy for me.”
Terricka also said she’s decided to get her tubes tied after the twins are born: “Whatever helps!”
