The Moms of the MAGAsphere Sure Made Mother’s Day Weird This Year

Over the weekend, MAGA women encouraged American women to procreate, serve their families, and overcome the pesky feminism that put us so backwards in the first place.

The Moms of the MAGAsphere Sure Made Mother’s Day Weird This Year

Another Mother’s Day has come and gone, and unfortunately for all of us, not a single MAGA woman was willing to let the day go by without beating the movement’s favorite dead horse, aka—once again—encouraging American women to procreate, serve their families, and overcome the pesky feminism that ever put us so backwards in the first place. Yikes

Let’s begin with First Lady Melania Trump, who on Friday published an embarrassing op-ed in the Washington Post titled “Mothers are America’s Strength.” (Guessing this is what Jeff Bezos meant when he said his outlet would begin writing more about some “personal liberties.”) In it, Melania refers to the “household” as the foundation of our democracy; urges people to “prioritize” their family; and claims “America can restore the honor of motherhood after years in which feminism often placed career above family, with consequences to our nation.” This, of course, coming from the woman married to the literal biggest consequence to our nation.

In one particular mind-numbingly stupid passage, Melania adds that she “constantly challenge[s] herself, as first lady, to think beyond the traditional responsibilities of the East Wing”—the part of the White House Trump literally demolished in October.

“Together, let’s champion a new American model that restores the honor of motherhood by encouraging all women to lead boldly at work while also making family the cornerstone of our national future,” Melania continues. All this coming, of course, a literal day after her husband lashed out against the journalist Rachel Scott for asking about his latest vanity project in Washington—and reportedly then calling her a bitch.

Melania Trump Publishes Jumbled Op-Ed Lauding Working Moms

First lady Melania Trump authored an ideologically jumbled opinion article Friday that at once criticized feminism, lauded working mothers, offered vague praise for traditional values and encouraged women to take time for self-care

Alas, the first lady’s just the latest woman of the MAGA movement to propel this twisted message that feminism has put women backwards, only to then recommend that remedying that would entail quitting your job, staying home, and focusing on your families. (The queen of this message, who we’ll get to later, being Erika Kirk.) Just two months ago, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller’s wife, Katie Miller, also went on Fox News to use this message to lobby against feminism, accusing the movement of having “pushed women into the workplace” and “dismant[ling] the family unit.”

“In honor of Mother’s Day, a reminder that peak feminism is having babies,” Katie tweeted Saturday night, alongside a photo of herself brandishing her pregnant belly. “The most radical thing a woman can do is embrace her biological destiny.” I mean, I’d say my personal biological destiny would be to never see her husband’s face again, but maybe destiny isn’t real! Just a thought.

Usha Vance, Vice President JD Vance’s wife, also shared a message for Mother’s Day, uploading a video where she calls her children “the greatest privilege of life.” The message is short and simple compared to that of her husband’s; Usha is currently expecting her 4th child—a pregnancy Vance has repeatedly taken the credit for pressuring her into. Usha was the latest pregnancy announcement from the Trump administration, aside from the Millers’ and that of Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who celebrated Sunday with some expensive Louis Vuitton swag. Must be nice!

No one amplifies this kind of feminism (where you can enjoy luxury, have a job, while simultaneously telling women to stay home and watch the kids) quite so strongly as Erika Kirk, however, who also couldn’t let Mother’s Day go by without bumping her trademark opinion. Speaking to a crowd of college students at a Turning Point USA commencement address, she suggested they get married young. Eep.  “To the men,” she said, “You are called to provide.” “To the women, you are called to nurture, to build, to shape lives with wisdom and endurance.” Again—eep.

The administration has not once shied from admitting how much it wants Americans to have babies, however—even at times overtly suggesting procreation in the worst kinds of scenarios—and we’re in what Dr. Mehmet Oz, the Medicare and Medicaid Administrator, considers a crisis of being “underbabied.” I’d say maybe the problem is more being “underbrained.”
