To All the Boys I've Loved Before Looks Like the Cute Teen Romcom of the Summer

Entertainment

Think about all the teen crushes you harbored in high school and all the super-secret romantic fantasies that accompanied them, scribbled into your journal for only your eyes to see. Okay, now imagine all those crushes finding out all those top secret fantasies at once. Welp!

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, based on Jenny Han’s 2014 young adult novel of the same name, is exactly that cringe-worthy adolescent scenario. Coming to Netflix on August 17 the movie follows quiet high-schooler Laura Jean Song, who writes love letters to her five crushes and stores them away in a box in her closet. “Peter with the beautiful eyes, Kenny from camp, Lucas from homecoming, John Ambrose from Model UN, and Josh, the boy next door,” she says. I’m already feeling this wide array of teen crush choices.

The movie, which looks like it was shot through an Instagram filter in the best way, looks extremely cute, despite the fact that it feels like teenage-me’s worst nightmare come to life. It’s also the latest promising rom-com to come out of Netflix, who might potentially hitch their wagon to the genre at the moment following the success of Set It Up. And it’s nice to see movies like To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, along with the recent Love, Simon and The Edge of Seventeen, return to an earnest teen movie reality where kids aren’t always dying and/or trying to save civilization from dystopian hell. The world is horrific enough out there, let’s let the youth relax a little.
