Canadian Anti-Choice Wackos Awarded Diamond Jubilee Medals

Latest

Canadian Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) Maurice Vellacott recommended two women for medals to award their “civil disobedience to further a just cause.” Now, ladies getting medals for civil disobedience is something I can usually get behind (fight the power, etc.), except for the fact that the women in question are Linda Gibbons and Mary Wagner, anti-abortion zealots who have been charged repeatedly for disturbing women’s health clinics. Not cool, ladies.

The medal in question is the commemorative Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, which was created for the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne. There are three versions of the medal, and the Canadian one is meant to honor significant contributions and achievements by Canadians. They have about 60,000 to give out total, and each MP gets about 30 to distribute as they see fit.

Vellacott saw fit to give two of them to these repeat offenders, whom he calls “heroines of humanity,” and compares to Martin Luther King, Jr. Well, I guess from his disturbed point-of-view, they certainly do qualify.

LifeSiteNews, an anti-abortion website, said Vellacott added notations to the certificates accompanying the two women’s medals that noted “Your faithful undying battle for justice for pre-born children.”
He told the website that the women were “using civil disobedience to further a just cause” and compared them to King.

Once again, Martin Luther King, Jr. Just so that can sink in.

You might think that because Wagner has been repeatedly arrested for disturbing clinics, and that Gibbons has been repeatedly charged with violating a judicial order to stay further than 150 metres from clinics, that someone in the Canadian government might oppose throwing them a g-d parade with cake and balloons, too.

Well, the awards are supposed to be approved by Canada’s Governor General’s Chancellery of Honours before they’re handed out, but apparently they have been, “unable to comment on whether the two nominations had been reviewed before the medals were handed out, or if there was any prohibition against giving medals to convicted criminals or people currently incarcerated.”

Basically, they’re Christina Applegate in Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead, telling everyone, “I’m right on top of that, Rose!” When really, the babysitter’s dead and their brother is on the roof shooting dishes with a BB gun.

This is ridiculous, for real. Allowing Vellacott to award these ladies for their dangerous behavior could mean real disaster for a clinic one day. Wagner, for example, had her last sentence reduced to time served and three years probation, but almost immediately breached her probation by entering another clinic. Scary.
