Captain Marvel Will Be the First Marvel Film to Be Scored by a Woman

You may not know Pinar Toprak by name, but if you’re one of the 125 million people who play the gaming sensation Fortnite, you’ve probably heard her music. And now, per IndieWire, the composer—who in addition to composing music for Fortnite has provided the scores to films like 2010’s The Lightkeepers—will also score the upcoming film Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson.

This makes Toprak the first woman to score a “major comic book movie.” In an Instagram post, Toprak wrote that she’s thrilled and honored by the opportunity, adding:

So many thoughts racing through my head. And the main one is gratitude.
I have so many people to thank for helping me on this journey but first and foremost, my incredible agents Laura Engel and Richard Kraft for believing in me from day one and Dave Jordan and directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck for giving me this opportunity of a lifetime.

The film scoring community is still very much a boy’s club (just look at this Wiki), so it’s tremendous to see composers like Toprak breaking in. For some other incredible recent film scores by women, check out Mica Levi’s Jackie, Lesley Barber’s Manchester By the Sea, Rachel Portman’s Their Finest, and Tamar-kali’s Mudbound.
