Christina Applegate Once Ditched Brad Pitt for Sebastian Bach

In case you needed a reminder that Christina Applegate was the 90s coolest cool girl, her new memoir, You with the Sad Eyes, is here to remind us all. And what better way to honor this year’s award season than by letting us all in on the time she ditched Brad Pitt for Sebastian Bach at the VMAs? Yes—Applegate curved a 90s-era Brad when she was just 17. If only we could all have an ounce of that confidence. 

In her memoir, the now 54-year-old recalls being in a friend group with a “little-known actor named Brad Pitt” in 1989. “One day I took another look at Brad and thought, hmm…Apparently, he did the same.” Little did she know that in two short years, America would look at Brad Pitt in Thelma and Louise and think “Hmmm…” as well. (And then in another three-ish decades, we’d take another look and think, “No.”) 

Applegate then says she brought Brad as her guest to the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards. And by guest, she means chauffeur. Pitt drove Applegate, her mom, and her best friend Lori Allison to the awards show that night. Sadly for Brad, once they arrived, Christina only had eyes for “long-haired hunk” Sebastian Bach, the former frontman of Skid Row. 

“I felt so powerful and sure of myself for once that when the awards show was over, I left with Sebastian Bach, not Brad Pitt.” Applegate writes. “I hate to put it like this, but Brad back then was still making his way as an actor, and he wasn’t yet THE Brad Pitt, the man of so many people’s dreams.” 

To add insult to injury, Pitt then had to “sullenly” drive her mother and best friend back home while Christina partied all night with a rockstar. 

“We didn’t talk for many years after that. Much later, but at different times, two of his movie star girlfriends asked me if it was true that I was the girl who left Brad behind at the MTV Video Music Awards. Brad had apparently told both of them separately that he was still mad at me.” 

Given what we now know about how Pitt tends to treat his movie star girlfriends, it’s hard to be too mad at her 17-year-old self for being – well – very 17-year-old about the whole thing. And luckily, Brad Pitt ultimately agreed. 

“Eventually, we agreed that I’d been a kid, and even though he’d deserved much better, it was time to forgive the child who dumped him for the lead singer of Skid Row,” she wrote. “Of course, Brad is now THE Brad Pitt, and Sebastian Bach…well, he still has long hair, I guess.”
