Dubai Doctor Recommends Premarital Genetic Testing

Latest

In celebration (?) of International Rare Diseases Day, a doctor in the UAE has recommended that couples get tested for genetic disorders before marriage in order to prevent producing babies that have rare and expensive conditions. While from a logical standpoint this makes sense, as some would argue that it’s irresponsible for couples with debilitating genetic conditions to pass on those genes, on the other hand, this reeks of proto-eugenics.

What do you think, readers? Is it necessary for couples to be aware of each other’s potential to bear disabled children? Would you want to know if your partner had a genetic disease? If they did, would it affect your decision to marry or have children with them?
