Haters Be Damned! Chappell Roan Has Been Vindicated

Over the weekend, Brazilian soccer star Jorginho publicly accused Chappell Roan of sending her security guard to berate his daughter, Ada Law, at a luxury hotel breakfast in São Paulo. Roan responded with a video claiming she had never seen said woman or child, and that the security guard was not part of her detail, prompting yet another video response from the mother, aka Jude Law’s baby mama, aka Catherine Harding, aka Cat Cavelli, who stuck by husband Jorginho’s story. It was a lot. And spoiler alert: It turns out the whole thing was a man’s fault, who’s surprised?

On Wednesday, the security guard in question, Pascal Duvier, broke his silence (via an Instagram apology, of course): “I do not normally address online rumors, but the accusations currently circulating are false and constitute defamation.” Coincidentally, Duvier was also a former security guard for the Kardashians and was fired after Kim Kardashian’s Paris robbery.

“I take full responsibility for the interactions on March 21st,” he wrote. “I was at the hotel on behalf of another individual, and I was not part of the personal security team of Chappell Roan. The actions I took were not on behalf of Chappell Roan, her personal security team, her management, or any other individuals.” So let me make sure I’m getting this straight. This whole thing was because of a stupid decision made by a man?!?!

“My sole interaction with the mother was calm and with good intentions, and the outcome of the encounter is regretful.” He added. Actually, this headache was because of two men, Duvier and Jorginho, who went and blew it all out of proportion on his Instagram story.

“WITHOUT YOUR FANS, YOU WOULD BE NOTHING. AND TO THE FANS, SHE DOES NOT DESERVE YOUR AFFECTION,” he wrote in his initial post. But Chappell is the diva? Hm…

The internet has been giggling all week about how Roan ate an 11-year-old girl and whatnot, and while in earnest Twitter fun, more sinister haters were on the prowl to take her down. A rumor began to spread that she had lied about “growing up poor” and was actually from a well-off family. (Thanks, Daily Mail).

What followed was a classic algorithmic tale. Baseless claims are dropped on the internet that, depending on your preconceived feelings about a person, either confirm or deny the bias, and thus strengthen the opinion you already had in your head. But haters be damned! Chappel has been vindicated!

The vindication confirms to Roan’s fans that she might have been the victim of a smear campaign, and some theorize that it was because she publicly left the Wasserman Agency in February—along with other artists like Orville Peck, Weyes Blood, and Wednesday, and more—after founder Casey Wasserman was found in the Epstein files.

Is Chappell perfect? No. Is she an angel? No. Is she a princess? A midwestern one, perhaps. But people are complicated. Her irreverence invites chaos. She says controversial things. And she calls people out, specifically men, which they tend not to like.
