Israeli Jews Furious at Natalie Portman Filming in Ultra-Orthodox Area
LatestNews that Natalie Portman’s production company acquired the film rights to Amos Oz’s autobiographical A Tale of Love and Darkness for her directorial debut was initially met with much excitement. But now that filming has begun in an ultra-Orthodox-populated section in Jerusalem, it looks like the locals are causing quite the stir.
The ultra-Orthodox residents of the Nahlaot neighborhood wrote a letter to the Jerusalem Municipality, who had cleared Portman for filming, airing their concerns and complaints to the filming, as they were not approached to endorse the scenes themselves:
“The scenes being filmed should have been examined first to make sure they don’t offend anybody’s sensitivities…”
While some protesters have apparently sprayed graffiti, decrying the “foreign invasion,” the municipality is working to conciliate the ultra-Orthodox objectors while also promoting a diverse culture in Jerusalem. Have fun kids.
