Kristen Wiig Will Direct the New Movie She's Writing with Annie Mumolo
LatestYippee! Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, the writing team who gave us Bridesmaids, are teaming up to write, produce and star in a new movie!. And better yet? Wiig is directing, making her one of few female directors currently signed onto a big studio picture.
The film will be a comedy about “best friends who find themselves in over their heads and out of their depths, which were, perhaps, not too deep to begin with.” It is currently untitled.
In a statement to the New York Times, Wiig and Mumolo announced, “We’re very excited to be writing. We will be going into a cave for months to finish. An actual cave. We found one that’s nice and big. We’re putting a couch in there.”
On directing, Wiig added, “I’ve been wanting to direct for some time now. This seems like the perfect first project.”
Studios have been gunning for the pair to team up again ever since Bridesmaids brought in a whopping $288.4 million at the box office. The new film will be produced by TriStar, a division of Sony, that’s currently trying to take on more exciting and off-beat projects.
“We’re pursuing original stories told with distinctive voices,” TriStar chairman Thomas E. Rothman told the Times. “In today’s Hollywood, that is zigging while others zag.”
Asked about the new Wiig/Mumolo film, Rothman replied, “Kristen and Annie assured me that the film will be a searing and depressing drama, which is what the world needs right now.”
Oh, a studio exec with a sense of humor!
