Kristi Noem’s Humiliating House Hearing

On Thursday, the Secretary of Homeland Security touched down at a House hearing with the Homeland Security Committee to defend the Trump administration’s mass deportation agenda, which has included cruel prisons, crackdowns led by Nazi-like teams, and a whole lot of misinformation to justify it all. At no point did the hearing go her way.

When asked by Rep. Seth Magaziner (D-R.I.) how many U.S. veterans DHS has deported, Noem replied, “Sir, we have not deported U.S. citizens or military veterans.” She ate her words shortly thereafter, as Magaziner then motioned to an aide who had Sae Joon Park on video call. The U.S. combat veteran and Purple Heart recipient who was shot twice in combat was told in June that he’d be detained if he didn’t self-deport. “Earlier this year, you deported [Park] to Korea, a country he hasn’t lived in since he was seven years old,” Magaziner said. “Can you tell us why you deported him?” She could not.

Magaziner: “How many United States military veterans have you deported?”

Noem: “Sir, we have not deported US citizens or military veterans.”

Magaziner: “Sae Joon Park is a U.S. Army combat veteran who was shot twice while serving our country…Can you please tell Mr. Park why you deported him?”

ICE Barbie was backed into another perjury corner after Rep. Dan Goldman (D-New York) asked her to confirm that immigrants with ongoing asylum cases are here legally. (As she affirmed, they are.) “If your department deports anyone with an ongoing asylum application, you are violating the law,” Goldman then said. “But the problem that we are seeing around the country is that you are not following the law.” Ouch.

Noem was joined by other FBI cronies like Michael Glasheen, who also made a massive blunder and struggled to answer basic questions about antifa—an unorganized group that the Trump administration has called a domestic terrorist organization.

“Where in the United States does antifa exist? If it’s a terrorist organization, and you’ve identified it as number one.” Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) asked the Trump-appointed Glasheen, who replied, “We are building out the infrastructure right now.” (!!??) To paraphrase Thompson’s response—uh, what?

To top it all off, Noem just got up and left before the meeting even ended. “I have to actually leave this hearing early, because the FEMA Review Council is giving their report today on suggestions for changes,” Noem told the committee. But, shortly after, Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) tweeted that the meeting was actually canceled, meaning Noem might have just been looking for an out.

Thompson then moved to subpoena her so she would have to reappear before the panel, asserting that she dodged her responsibilities and potentially even lied about the FEMA meeting. But a DHS spokesperson told the Hill that Noem only found out at 12:26 p.m. that the meeting was canceled, but, well, we know how trustworthy they are.
