Mad Men Barbie Dolls: Awesome, Absurd

Latest

The Mad Men dolls are not for kids. According to The New York Times, they’re part of the “premium-price collectors’ series” for adults. But there’s a problem with the mini Don Draper, Betty Draper, Roger Sterling and Joan Holloway:

Stuart Elliott writes:

The dolls come with period accessories like hats, overcoats, pearls and padded undergarments, but no cigarettes, ashtrays, martini glasses or cocktail shakers.

But, but! The smoking and the drinking is the best part! Okay, not the best part. The best part is when Don Draper makes a speech about a slide projector and you find yourself tearing up. But the smoking and drinking are integral. They’re part of the fantasy, the retro-cinematic quality, and help create an authentic ’60s atmosphere. Maybe these vices don’t jibe with Barbie’s wholesome brand, but since my Barbies often had scissor sex in the bathtub, I don’t exactly think of them as symbols of purity anyway.

I still want one, however. Joan, of course. I’m just going to have to figure out how to find the right size minature booze. And a mini Rothko would be fun. And some mini typewriters. And by the way: Where is Peggy?!?!
