Medical Schools Neglect Gay Health Issues
LatestA new study shows that medical schools devote just five hours of instruction over students’ entire careers to topics affecting LGBT health, such as gender reassignment surgery. Also, a quarter of med-school deans acknowledged that their school’s coverage of the topics was “poor” or “very poor.” This can result in substandard care for LGBT patients — says study author Dr. Juno Obedin-Maliver, “I’m an ob-gyn and I have had lesbian patients come to me and say I haven’t had a Pap test in 20 years because my doctors said I didn’t need one.”
