Medical Schools Neglect Gay Health Issues

Latest

A new study shows that medical schools devote just five hours of instruction over students’ entire careers to topics affecting LGBT health, such as gender reassignment surgery. Also, a quarter of med-school deans acknowledged that their school’s coverage of the topics was “poor” or “very poor.” This can result in substandard care for LGBT patients — says study author Dr. Juno Obedin-Maliver, “I’m an ob-gyn and I have had lesbian patients come to me and say I haven’t had a Pap test in 20 years because my doctors said I didn’t need one.”
