Melania Trump, the beautiful wife of nacho cheese golem Donald, appeared on morning television today to talk about the person she’s chosen to spend her life beside. Ms. Trump revealed that she doesn’t believe her husband “insulted the Mexicans,” (he did), and she doesn’t think he called for a total ban on Muslim immigration (he did).
Melania hasn’t been very visible on the campaign trail thus far, but following her husband’s win Tuesday night in Nevada, she chose to break that silence with an interview on Morning Joe, a program with whom the Trumps share a warm and mutually beneficial relationship. It was, as you can imagine, a very tough interview.
On immigration, Ms. Trump claimed her husband “opened a conversation nobody did,” and said that although she’s an immigrant, she’s not the kind of immigrant he’s fulminating against.
“I followed the law,” she told Mika Brzezinski. “I followed the law the way it’s supposed to be. I never thought to stay here without papers.”
“He said it would be temporary,” she explained. “And it’s not for all the Muslims. He said we need to screen them.”
(He definitely said it was for “all the Muslims,” Melania.)
She also revealed that she doesn’t agree with her husband “all the time.”
“Sometimes he listens, sometimes he don’t,” she explained. That said, she added, “I follow the news from A-Z. I know what’s going on. I’m on the phone with my husband a few times a day.”
Finally, Ms. Trump insisted that women are treated fine in the Trump organization.
“They’re treated equal,” she said. “I see him in life. He treats women the same as men. he will tell you what’s in his heart, what he thinks, he will not hold it back if you’re a woman. you’re human, a woman or a man, it’s no different.”
And that was that. Back in the studio, Brzezinski described Melania as “extremely cultured and articulate.” Which is true! She speaks several languages, and, well, looks pretty great considering who she routinely stands next to.
