Moves Is a Free App That Tracks All Your Movement. It Is Satisfying.

Much unlike many a magazine editor who recommends you buy all sorts of crap that they most likely got for free, your Jezebel staff doesn’t get jack shit (other than books, unsolicited). And that’s how it should be. But on our own time, in our personal lives, we still buy stuff. So this is Worth It, our recommendation of random things that we’ve actually spent our own money on. These are the things we buy regularly or really like, things we’d actually tell our friends about. And now we’re telling you.

Hopefully this still counts as a “Worth It” because it’s free, but I think it does because there are tons of free shitty apps out there clouding the beautiful iPhone interface. Moves is a welcome addition to the fray, snuggling between Instagram and Instacast and making itself right at home.

Moves is simple — it just tracks your movement. It does it every day, and it starts automatically. Meaning, you don’t have to open it to record your jog or walk or whatever — it just starts that shit when you start moving. You could say that it’s got the moves to track your moves, if you were the worst at puns.

That’s it. That’s all it does. That said, it’s enough. Seeing the amount I walk each day has caused me to strive for personal bests on the next day, and it’s just satisfying to see all that exciting movement in one place. I’m a mover and a shaker! I’ve started taking the furthest parking spot out just to get some extra steps in. My former Weight Watchers leader(s) would be so proud. Speaking of WW, you can have Moves calculate your calorie burning for the day, if you’re so inclined.

The design is nice, too. Simple and clean. Easy.

Here’s how the Moves site says it compares to Fitbit, Nike+, and all that stuff:

I don’t know if all that’s true since I don’t have those things, but I can tell you that it does do all the things that are checked next to its name.

Here’s some screenshots! On the day below, I only walked 2,369 steps — not cool, Laura. (Don’t worry, I did better the next day — this is from when I had started Orange Is the New Black, and my dogs were lucky they got a walk, period.):

It also tracks your walk distance and route:

Yes, it’s totally precise —I did walk on water that day.

It also covers other modes of transport. Here’s me driving to the beach:

(DO NOT WORRY: I did not go in the water. I know the water is for sharks and not me. I just laid on the beach and looked sexy/burned.)

So far the app is only for iPhone, but an Android version is coming. (Don’t they always say that? GET AN IPHONE! jkjkjk)

I love this app. I love that it’s free, it starts everyday on its own, and it’s fun to check in and challenge yourself, if that’s the kind of person you are. Now, please excuse me, I’ve only walked 4,569 steps today and I want to at least get to 6,969 before I call it a night.
