Today, in feature films nobody was clamoring for: There’s a Betty Boop movie in the works. And Simon Cowell, of all people, is involved.
That’s according toVariety. Cowell’s Syco Entertainment and Animal Logic has partnered with Fleischer Studios (which owns Boop) for the project. The plan is to produce a “music-driven hybrid animated comedy.” Round up everybody who worked on The Great Gatsby soundtrack, I suppose! Can’t wait for Katy Perry’s chart-topping sensation, “Boop-oop-a-doop Booty Pop.”
It’s a weird choice for a reboot—while Boop is hugely famous, the curvy flapper has a pretty lascivious aura for a cartoon. They cleaned her up after the Code went into affect, but to this day she’s more associated with tattoos than children’s merch. What do you even do with this in 2014?
“Betty is an icon, a diva and one of the biggest stars in the world — I’m thrilled to be working with her,” Cowell said in a statement. “Betty, I hope you’re going to be a good girl!” Dude. Gross.
