Shark Week, that great Discovery Channel event of mixed-message nature television, returns tonight, signaling the end of summer. Enjoy programs with alarmist titles like “Shark Psychopaths: The Most Dangerous, Bloodthirsty, and Insane Sharks on the Planet, and Why They’re All COMING FOR YOU RIGHT NOW,” and then marvel over how the host can say with a straight face at the end, “But really, folks, sharks have more to fear from us than we have to fear from them.” Except that they’re monsters with razor teeth that never, ever sleep, even when they’re sunbathing.
