Woman Raising Money to Make 'Relentlessly Gay' Yard Even Gayer

In Depth

One woman in Baltimore is not taking complaints about her “relentlessly gay” yard lying down.

According to DNA Info, Julie Baker was just making rainbow solar lights to decorate her yard when a concerned neighbor, excited to make an internet comment in real life, decided that her display of rainbows was much too much and just had to write here a note asking her to remember the Christians and children that had to share her area. If she didn’t comply, the note writer threatened, they’d be forced to “call the police on you.” I don’t know exactly what the police would do in that situation—maybe arrest the yard on charges of being fabulous?—but the letter writer is certain that it would be bad.

Here’s the note:

Baker isn’t interested in “toning it down” to appease whichever one of her neighbors has taken up the cause for Christians and children in the area. The solar lights, which spell out “love” and “ohana,” according to Baker, aren’t going anywhere. In fact, now that she’s been accused of having a relentlessly gay yard, she wants to prove a point by making it even gayer. So, she’s started a GoFundMe which has already raised more than six times its original $5,000 goal. (No idea what $5,000 will do to your yard, but apparently Baker wants to pay for a relentlessly gay roof if she has the money.)

If the note Baker received is genuine, her response is the best way to handle something like this; not with anger and recrimination, but by embracing the concept of a gay yard as hard as she can.

Here’s what Baker wrote in her GoFundMe description:

I am starting this fundraiser so I can work to make my Home even More “relentlessly gay” If we go high enough, I will see if I can get a Rainbow Roof! Because my invisible relentlessly gay rainbow dragon should live up there in style!Put simply, I am a widow and the mother of four children, my youngest in high school and I WILL NOT Relent to Hatred. Instead, I will battle it with whimsy and beauty and laughter and love, wrapped around my home, yard and family!!!Thanks for your relentlessly gay support!Relentlessly!!!

Same.
