Women’s Stories Matter—But Apparently So Does Using AI to Cut Costs!

“It’s so, so important that women are involved in AI because it will be the future of filmmaking,” Reese Witherspoon told Glamour. Great!

Women’s Stories Matter—But Apparently So Does Using AI to Cut Costs!

There’s something concerning happening in Hollywood… celebrities are willingly handing out testimonials about how much they love AI. Kim Kardashian posted her ChatGPT business convos; Allison Williams won’t stop raving about AI; Grimes even previously offered to split royalties with fans who made songs using AI versions of her voice. And now, Reese Witherspoon.

While promoting the 4th season of The Morning Show, Reese told Glamour how she feels about the increasingly controversial topic, and…it wasn’t great!

“It’s so, so important that women are involved in AI because it will be the future of filmmaking,” adding that she’s “looking forward to how media is evolving and how I can help be part of bringing women along in those emerging industries. And now we’re doing it with AI.”

Listen, I think we can all agree that most things would be better if more women were involved. But being obsessed with AI in this ~girlboss~ way is the exact type of dystopian corporate scheme that Jack Donaghy probably would have thought up on 30 Rock to fire half the writers’ room.

It sucks to hear Williams talk about how she loves ChatGPT, but it really sucks to hear Witherspoon—who founded Hello Sunshine, the production company behind “women-centered” stories (Big Little Lies, Gone Girl, Wild)—suggest that AI should be integrated into storytelling. Not to mention that practically every beach read she touches gets a film adaptation and a spot on the bestseller list.

But don’t worry, she had some encouraging words for those hesitant to welcome AI into their industry.

“And you can be sad and lament it all you want, but the change is here. It will never be a lack of creativity and ingenuity and actual physical manual building of things,” she said. “It might diminish, but it’s always going to be the highest importance in art and in expression of self.”

Don’t like it? Too late! Not exactly the sentiment you want to hear while thousands of Hollywood jobs are evaporating and the city itself is emptying out. She’s built her brand on telling women’s stories—because “Women’s stories matter, they just matter”—but here she sounds more like a studio exec who’s trying to figure out how to use AI to get rid of entry-level jobs.

Witherspoon then rattled off her go-to AI lineup, praising search bots like Perplexity and Vetted AI: “Like, if you’re buying a blender, it’ll show you six different blenders and also recommend the best product.”

I am always talking about the burden of blender shopping. There are too many pros and cons to consider!

She added: “I use AI Assistant. Simple AI is an assistant that can be really helpful for anyone who doesn’t want to make a doctor’s appointment or sit on hold. It’s an incredible tool to save time.”

OK, now this just seems like an ad…? Respectfully… we just want the old Elle Woods back. Because this Elle Woods would probably use ChatGPT to pass her LSAT.

But maybe there’s something more strategic at play here. Why are all these celebrities being so loudly pro-AI? Are they trying to leave a digital footprint of loyalty just in case the robots take over? And If so…

WE LOVE YOU AI <3 Please spare us, thanks.
