Writer Revokes Lady Gaga's Feminist Credentials

Latest

Someone named Hermione Hoby is “heartbroken” about Lady Gaga‘s photo shoot for Q magazine. Hoby had previously been won over by Gaga’s pro-woman comments. For instance:

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times last December, Gaga told the journalist Ann Powers: “I’m getting the sense you’re a little bit of a feminist, like I am, which is good… I find that men get away with saying a lot in this business, and that women get away with saying very little. In my opinion women need and want someone to look up to that they feel has the full sense of who they are, and says, ‘I’m great.'”

Hoby liked that! But then Hoby saw Q, where:

In true lads’ mag style, the image is of a topless blonde, in black leather-like trousers, one gloved hand coyly positioned over her boobs, the other not so coyly rammed against her crotch. Jutted hip, parted lips and vacuous expression tick the remaining boxes that constitute the mainstream image of sexy.

Oh, dear. Mainstream sexy. The horror. And that’s not all: Rumor has it that Lady Gaga cried at the photoshoot. Hoby writes: “The thought of Gaga crying is seismically destabilising… Tears… do not become her.”

Got it? Feminists don’t cry, ladies! Make a note of it.
