Chloe and Halle Are Better Than Alright

Grown-ish, the black-ish spinoff starring Yara Shahidi, turned out to be a success in large part because of its talented (and also hot) ensemble cast. On the series, which completed its impressive first season in March (former Jezebel staffer Kara Brown was in the writer’s room), Chloe and Halle Bailey (widely known first as singers) play blunt, hilarious, and sometimes too real sisters, friends of Shahidi’s college freshman character Zoey.

Pre-grown-ish, you might’ve recognized Chloe and Halle from their YouTube cover of Beyoncé’s “Pretty Hurts,” which among other cover performances got them a label deal with Beyoncé’s Parkwood Entertainment. Earlier this year—following their 2016 EP Sugar Symphony and a 2017 mixtape—they released The Kids Are Alright, a debut album full of firm, fearless tracks about the trials of the young and restless.

In this inaugural revamped edition of Jezebel Quickies, Chloe and Halle talk about getting their anger out through their grown-ish characters, music as therapy, and “turning negatives into positives.”
