Here's the Trailer for That Movie Where Willem Dafoe Really Does Look an Awful Lot Like Vincent van Gogh
EntertainmentMoviesThis is the movie I’ve been waiting for—the one in which Willem Dafoe sounds and gesticulates like Willem Dafoe but looks just like Vincent van Gogh and always has. Or at least how van Gogh imagined he looked. Oh, and there’s Oscar Isaac!
The first trailer was released on Wednesday and I’m really feeling it. The field of ashen sunflowers. That straw hat. Being surrounded by “stupid, ignorant, wicked” people when you’re just trying to think about eternity. A face full of swirling, post-impressionistic wrinkles.
Some practical matters: The movie is called At Eternity’s Gate, and it’s directed by Julian Schnabel (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly). In addition to Dafoe and Isaac (as Paul Gauguin!), the film stars Mads Mikkelsen. Deadline reports that the script is based on “van Gogh’s letters, common agreement about events in his life that present as facts, hearsay, and moments that are invented.”
At Eternity’s Gate will make its North American debut at the New York Film Festival on October 12.
