Some magazine insiders are irritated by how the industry’s top awards reorganized the “general excellence” category: Women’s magazines are in the “Fashion, Service and Lifestyle” category, while fashion-centric GQ and other men’s magazines fall under the same category as “business, science and active-interest publications.” Separately, about a third of the writer finalists are women.
