Just a quick Fourth of July story: A random man was wondering around my small suburban city’s celebration wearing a custom hat that said “Booby Inspector” and a Donald Trump t-shirt. God bless America!
Here’s all the shit we couldn’t cover today:
- Bill Shine, the Fox News executive ousted for covering up sexual harassment, has been named the White House’s deputy chief of communications. “He brings over two decades of television programming, communications, and management experience to the role,” the White House said in a statement. [Politico]
- Scott Pruitt’s resignation letter is about as slavish as humanly possible. [Fox News/Twitter]
- But Pruitt’s obsequious letter isn’t particularly unusual in Trump’s cabinet, where members work hard to curry favor with the president. While some, like Mike Pompeo, are successful, others like Jeff Sessions are not. Apparently, Sessions is so disliked by Trump that the president refuses “to speak his name, sometimes just referring to him simply as ‘one of my attorneys.’” The report adds: “[Trump] unloads to confidants whenever Sessions appears on the TV in his private West Wing kitchen or his office on Air Force One. And he has accused the Justice Department of conspiring against him.” [Associated Press]
- According to reports, Trump has narrowed his Supreme Court nominee to two candidates: conservative judges Brett Kavanaugh and Raymond Kethledge. Amy Coney Barrett is reportedly also still in contention but Trump has asked more questions about Kavanaugh and Kethledge. [Reuters]
- Senator Susan Collins says it’s fair to ask the Supreme Court nominee about his or her stance on Roe v. Wade. “A nominee’s personal views on Roe v. Wade are not relevant to my decision,” Collins said in a recent interview. “What is relevant is whether they’re committed to long-standing precedent.” [Roll Call]
- A loophole in federal policy exempts two detention centers holding migrant children from welfare inspections by state agencies. Tornillo Port of Entry in Texas and a center in Homestead, Florida do not have to be inspected because they are on federally-owned land. [CBS News]
- The White House responded to the Abolish ICE movement with a series of racist talking points. [Twitter]
- Rhode Island Democrats are angry that the state party endorsed a man who voted for Donald Trump over an experienced woman. [Associated Press]
- Former MSNBC host Ed Schultz has passed away at 64. [HuffPost]
Here are some tweets the president was allowed to publish:
