Mom Arrested for Letting Kid Play Outside Has Been Fired by McDonald's

Latest

An update: Debra Harrell, the mother who was arrested and charged with “unlawful conduct” after adults saw her daughter playing in a park alone, has been fired from her job at McDonald’s.

According to Think Progress:

While Robert Phillips, the attorney representing [Harrell] pro bono at McGowan, Hood & Felder, said that she was released from jail the day after she was arrested on bond, he confirmed that she had been let go from her job. He didn’t have any information as to why. A spokesperson for McDonald’s declined to comment, saying it is inappropriate to discuss a human resources issue. She also said the company is cooperating with local police in their investigation of the situation.

Still, there’s good news: Strangers — people who don’t know and have never met Harrell — have rallied to support her. A fund organized to offer the mom financial support has now raised over $24,000 — more than double its goal of $10k. Clair Ryan, who spearheaded the crowdfunding effort, has been in touch with Harrell and her lawyer, and writes that although Harrell’s charges are pending, she has been reunited with her daughter, Regina. And:

Regina made the third grade honor roll at North Augusta Elementary last year – not exactly the calling card of a troubled and neglected kid, is it?

Ryan adds:

I’m going to be sending a big fat check to her trust later this week or early next at the very latest.
