Per Mike Johnson, Mike Johnson’s ‘Sick of This Shit’

It’s unusual that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) talks about anything other than not knowing things, but it’s downright rare that he—in his own terms—loses his shit. 

Still, no matter how hellish, embarrassing, or cringey you’re known for being, everyone has their limits. Which is maybe why it’s not so surprising that on Friday, NOTUS reported that about a week ago, Johnson—who monitors porn intake with his son—apparently exploded at his fellow GOP lawmakers while trying to defend a veterans benefits bill he wanted to pass before the midterms. That is, right before he immediately forgot who he was—and regretted having an ounce of moxie. 

For context, Johnson was upset about the prospects of failing to pass the Take Care of America’s Veterans Act, which was first proposed by Rep. Mike Bost (R-Ill.) and Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kansas) in June. It proposed a bundle of new compensation efforts for hundreds of thousands of veterans—albeit, controversially, it did so by cutting back future disability claims. 

It was while Johnson was discussing the bill with fellow Republicans that both agreed and disagreed with the bill, however, that he apparently snapped.

He’d brought a select few lawmakers to his “ceremonial room” to hash things out, hoping everyone could come to a compromise. But Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fl.) and Rep. Zach Nunn (R-Iowa) started fighting over their stances on it (Luna was pro; Nunn was against), and Luna at one point got upset with Johnson. It was here, NOTUS reports, that Johnson snapped. “I’m sick of this shit,” he barked. (Allegedly.)

It was pretty much right after he lost it that he suddenly remembered he had no backbone, though, and Johnson reportedly immediately apologized to Luna. A kid, Rep. Gabe Evans’ (R-Colo.) son, was also apparently in the room when all this went down, so Johnson also went to him and got down on a knee to apologize to him, too. Nice one, Mike! 

The lower chamber eventually canceled plans to vote on the bill last Thursday, a move that Johnson blamed on “misinformation.” Add that to the list of bills he couldn’t get his party on board with.
