Student Asks Miss America to Prom, Gets Suspended
LatestMiss America Nina Davuluri recently visited a Pennsylvania high school to talk about the importance STEM careers, and during a Q & A session 18-year-old Patrick Farves took it upon himself to ask Ms. Davuluri to prom. Honestly anyone who noticed that a nationwide pageant winner was visiting a high school in springtime probably could have seen this one coming a mile away.
So while I wouldn’t call it anywhere near original, it was enough to get the kid in plenty of trouble. Apparently, school officials caught wind of Farves’ plan ahead of time and warned him not to go through with it. And since, in true rebel-without-a-cause fashion, Farves went ahead and asked anyway, he was promptly suspended. But Davuluri has since reached out to the school, asking for the school to reconsider their decision. The Miss America Oragnization Facebook posted a statement on behalf of Davuluri:
“On Thursday, a student invited me to prom and gave me a flower while I was giving a presentation in York, Pennsylvania. I was flattered by the gesture although I am unfortunately unable to attend due to my travel schedule. I later learned of the disciplinary action taken and reached out to the school in hopes that they will reconsider their decision.”
“Meeting and interacting with students across the country has been an important and rewarding part of my year as Miss America. I always encourage students to follow their dreams through education, and I’m inspired daily by the enthusiasm and aspirations of the bright young adults I have the pleasure of meeting through my travels.”
That’s pretty merciful of the grand Miss America. But really, we all know that actually attending prom is a much bigger punishment, so don’t get to comfortable there Farves.
