Teen Asks Disney to Make a Plus-Size Princess
LatestLook, I like Disney princesses as much as the next nostalgia-prone millennial. But they do tend to look like they were all churned out of the same assembly line. Remember what happened to Merida when it was time to move her into the pantheon?
One teen wants to change that, though. The Huffington Post reports that Jewel, a junior from Virginia, has started a Change.org petition, asking Disney to please imagineer some plus-sized princesses. So far, it’s gathered 1,367 signatures.
From the petition:
It’s extremely difficult to find a positive representation of plus-size females in the media. If Disney could make a plus-size female protagonist who was as bright, amazing, and memorable as their others, it would do a world of good for those plus-size girls out there who are bombarded with images that make them feel ugly for not fitting the skinny standard.
Disney films are highly influential and wide-spread, and they impact the lives of many children, especially girls. It would be revolutionary for Disney to show support to a group of girls who are otherwise horrendously bullied by the media. It would make many young girls feel confident and worthy to see a strong character that looks like them.
Of course, DreamWorks beat Disney to the punch by a solid decade with Fiona from Shrek. But it would be nice to have another Disney-themed costume besides Ursula—though “sea witch” is certainly a look worth rocking several years in a row.
