It’s Broadway’s biggest night, and the stars of the American stage did not come to play.
The 2023 Tony Awards kicked off Sunday night in New York City’s United Palace. Some Like It Hot was up for a whopping 13 awards. Jodie Comer’s one-woman play interrogating sexual violence is up for four. Ariana DeBose of BAFTAs rap fame is hosting the ceremony for the second year in a row. We couldn’t be more excited to see who takes home what—and whether Jessica Chastain makes it halfway to EGOT status for her role in A Doll’s House.
In the meantime, let’s take a look at what everyone wore on the hot pink carpet. We’ll update as the night goes on.
Few people can pull off yellow like this woman. 10/10, she’s a goddess.
Getty Images flagged this image to me as containing “nudity,” but Nyong’o is actually wearing a custom silver breastplate designed by Pakistani artist Misha Japanwala. I live for this warrior take on freeing the nipple.
Our Prima Facie star, apparently having recovered from NYC’s air crisis, went simple, classic and elegant in black.
Broadway’s embattled Funny Girl went for a sweet garden party vibe. It’s pretty.
The star of A Strange Loop went head to toe (and to fingers) gingham with a clashing checkered bag. It’s an amount of pattern that could give someone a seizure on sight if it wasn’t pulled off so perfectly, but of course Hopper is slaying in it.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel went for a whimsical Y2K vibe in polka dots and butterflies. Cute, but my not my favorite.
Absolutely obsessed with her floral printed bodice and silk pants. Extremely handsome couple.
Williams’ Flapper-era vibes go perfectly with her signature platinum pixie cut.
McDonald is nominated for Best Leading Actress in a Play for her role in Ohio State Murders, and this understated but sexy ruched navy number is perfect on her.
The & Juliet star, up for Best Actress in a Musical, swung for the fences in a lilac feathered gown that looks like it would be really fun to dance in, at the very least.
As of the updating of this slideshow, Newell has WON Best Actor in a Musical for their role in Shucked, and they showed up looking like the trophy itself. Gorgeous!
The producer carried around a red rope as an accessory to his Little Red Riding Hood-inspired fit. I’m not sure I entirely get what he’s going for here, but I have zero complaints.
The Color Purple actor wore hands down one of my favorite looks of the night. Pure joy.
Hell yea, the men are getting it tonight.
More red ropes! OK! I love the drama of the sleeves.
Ghee is up for Best Actor in Some Like It Hot, and I’d venture to say no one had more fun getting dressed than they did. Gorgeous color, love the layered chokers, it’s a yes for me.
Another floral garden party look! Again I say: pretty and romantic, if not the most exciting.
Yes to the high slit and red lip.
Jackson is up for Best Actor in August Wilson’s The Piano Lesson, and he has already won for best date with the best sleeves.
And here we have one of the best maternity looks I’ve ever seen on a red carpet. The actor is stunning in marigold.
Frost won Best Actor in a Musical last year for his portrayal of Michael Jackson, and the man was obviously born to entertain.
I am not sure what’s going on with the proportions on Platt’s suit, but we love a matching couple!
Angela Bassett did the thing, and so did our host on Sunday night in a shimmering custom Prada gown. She’s literally glowing!
It’s giving Disney princess (in a good way). Everyone who tried to pull off yellow tonight pulled it off, and that brings me great joy.
Jordan Cooper, who wrote Ain’t No Mo’, is the youngest Black American playwright on Broadway. And LOOK AT THIS LEATHER SUIT ON THIS MAN.
This is just a little too cosplay for me, I’m so sorry!
Adrianna Hicks, who plays Catherine of Aragon in Six (yes that rhymed and yes it’s one of my favorite musicals), is a walking abstract painting.
Williams, who’s performing tonight and up for a Best Actress award for Some Like It Hot, looks appropriately regal and radiant in royal blue.
Miles is up for a Tony tonight for her role as the beggar woman in Sweeney Todd, but she’s not gonna have to beg for anything in this look!
Cruz, my favorite actor from My So-Called Life (!!!), was here to present Best Actor in a Musical, and he looked sharp as hell in all-black with a touch of silver hair.
In presenting an award tonight, Benton referred to Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) as the “Grand Wizard” of her home state, which makes her gorgeous dress hotter by infinity IMO.
Adorable, no notes.
