Afghanistan Promotes First Female Police Chief

Change is happening in Afghanistan and Col. Jamila Bayaz, a 50-year-old mother of five, is leading the charge. Literally.

Bayaz was recently appointed the country’s first female police chief, and she will be running the first district of Kabul.

“This is a chance not just for me, but for the women of Afghanistan,” she told NBC News Wednesday. “I will not waste it. I will prove that we can handle this burden.”

Let ‘em know Jamila! Her promotion represents the country’s progress but I imagine the Colonel will have her work cut out. And when sexism and archaic gender roles get you down out there in Kabul Jamila, remember Chaka Khan’s words.
