Black-ish Creator Kenya Barris Is Making a Bewitched Reboot

Entertainment

It’s tempting to respond to the idea of retooling Bewitched with groans of frustration at the reboot addition running rampant in showbiz. But then again, this is Kenya Barris and Yamara Taylor of Black-ish putting their own spin on a concept that was pretty entertaining in Nick at Nite reruns.

Deadline reported that Barris and Taylor will be adapting the sitcom from the 1960s into “a single camera, interracial blended family comedy” for ABC Studios. Specifically:

In Bewitched, written by Barris and Taylor, Samantha, a hardworking black single mom who happens to be a witch, marries Darren, a white mortal who happens to be a bit of a slacker. They struggle to navigate their differences as she discovers that even when a black girl is literally magic, she’s still not as powerful as a decently tall white man with a full head of hair in America.

Barris essentially made the deal on the way out the door, as he just left for an overall deal at Netflix.

Just as long as nobody is so foolish as to try I Dream of Jeannie.
