Do you love food porn? Of course you do! Who doesn’t? Communists, that’s who! And hey, you know what’s especially fun to look at with food porn? Fruits and veggies, which are rich in — WAIT, NO, COME BACK, I MUST TELL YOU OF THE WONDERS OF BRUSSELS SPROUTS.
In an effort to promote interest in fruits and vegetables, Bolthouse Farms (a carrot and juice company, it needs to be noted) started the Food Porn Index, a website that tracks the food hashtags used on Twitter and Instagram in order to see what’s trending. When you click on certain foods, it takes you to riveting internet games like “guac-a-mole” and “melon meditation,” because apparently this is 1996 and they’re taking their cues from what the Space Jam homepage wished it could be.
The funniest/most depressing part is probably this, though:
“To date, the website has collected nearly 200 million hashtags — 71 percent are for junk food, while only 29 percent are for healthy foods. That’s actually a slight improvement from when the site was first launched back in February, when the numbers sat at 72.4 percent and 27.6 percent.”
Over the past month, an additional 1.4% of users are more interested in vegetables! BRING ON THE BEET AND KALE SALAD, LET’S GET CRAZY UP IN HERE!
In all seriousness, this isn’t a bad thing — Cthulhu knows we could stand to eat some more veggies in this country. While I doubt people will be fantasizing about bean sprouts or spaghetti squash any time soon, it’s good to see someone making the effort, even if it IS a company with skin in the game. This is to say nothing of the fact that this website is kind of a cool resource in general. So, 10/10, would guac-a-mole again, I suppose.
