Hillary Swank is tired of being underpaid. While promoting a new film called The Homesman, she pointed out Hollywood’s financial double standard and it includes a lot of missing zeros from her paycheck.
“My male counterpart will get paid 10 times more than me — 10 times,” she told students at the Loyola Marymount University School of Film & TV, according to the Guardian. “Not double, but 10 times for the same job. We only have this much left for the female actress. I mean, there’s two genders on this earth. Both are compelling, interesting, diverse, wonderful in all their own separate ways. And yet there’s an influx of male roles and there’s just not for women.”
The Guardian‘s Ben Child points out that while the actual monetary difference might not be 10:1, the general split between male and female actors’ salaries are at least 2:1, which is still unacceptable. If both genders are expected to draw butts into movie theaters seats (or Netflix, iTunes and Amazon Prime ques) and create millions in revenue, why not pay them equally? Sexism, that’s why.
