Latina Actors Get 7 Percent of Speaking Roles for Women on TV, Which Is a Record High

EntertainmentTV

A new study found that 7 percent of all speaking roles for women in television go to Latina actors. It was one of the only bright spots in the report from San Diego State’s Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film; previously it was just 5 percent of all speaking roles. Oh yay! Crumbs? I love crumbs.

As the Hollywood Reporter points out, that also means 2.8 percent of all speaking roles go to Latina actors. And as the study authors themselves point out, they remain one of the most underrepresented minorities on television; black and Asian women’s share of speaking roles remained the same from the year before, at 19 and 6 percent, respectively.

The study collected its data by randomly selecting one episode from TV shows that aired from September 2017 to May 2018. The leaders of the study have been tracking representation of women on-screen and behind the camera for 21 years.
