Twenty years ago, a Dartmouth grad went to Hollywood dreaming of becoming a filmmaker. She ended up, reports The LA Times, “in a dark room at the Playboy Channel editing hard-core pornography.” But Julie Davis‘s story has a happy ending:
The Playboy gig offered a 401(k) and medical benefits, and Davis used her experience there as the basis for her new film, Finding Bliss, in which Leelee Sobieski plays a college-educated young woman… who ends up working at a porn company.
But apparently, the porn industry didn’t just give writer/director Davis the idea for her latest film — it also opened her eyes to the complicated machinery behind getting movies made:
“Every day was such a compromise,” she says of the film’s shoot. “We were getting half the shots. We just didn’t have the time. … And the producers didn’t care. They’re all about the bottom line. They don’t care about what’s in the box; it’s just about the cover of the box — like a porn film, almost. And this was my labor of love.”
The trailer looks cute, so the question must be asked: Can you learn more life lessons from working in porn than from going to an ivy league school?
