Brian Jeffs and Nathan Nephew, the two cofounders of Michigan Open Carry, have teamed up and written a new children’s book that’s a MUST READ for any tiny gun nut. “My Parents Open Carry” is “a wholesome family book that reflects the views of the majority of the American people, i.e., that self-defense is a basic natural right and that firearms provide the most efficient means for that defense.” Meanwhile, approximately 10,000 children are injured or killed in gun incidents each year.
“If you open carry and have a difficult time explaining why to your family and friends, or if you want to learn about the open carry of a handgun, or if you’ve wondered if open carry is right for you, then this book is what you need,” they write on the “My Parents Open Carry” website.
They add:
Come join 13-year-old Brenna Strong along with her mom, Bea, and her dad, Richard, as they spend a typical Saturday running errands and having fun together. What’s not so typical is that Brenna’s parents lawfully open carry handguns for self-defense. The Strongs join a growing number of families that are standing up for their 2nd Amendment rights by open carrying and bringing gun ownership out of the closet and into the mainstream.
Unsurprisingly, “My Parents Open Carry” is filled with wrong information. Jeffs and Nephew claim that “there are several cases of robbers who staked out a store to rob only to go somewhere else because they saw someone with a gun in the store” and that “open carry can deter a crime.” The facts, however, prove otherwise.
Ian Millhiser points out at ThinkProgress that:
although the fantasy of a gun owner halting a crime is common among conservative gun advocates — “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun,” in the words of National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre — the reality is very different. For one thing, research shows that lax gun laws and increased gun violence are linked. According to a 2013 Center for American Progress report, “the 10 states with the weakest gun laws collectively have a level of gun violence that is more than twice as high—104 percent higher—than the 10 states with the strongest gun laws.”
