Watch the Eerie First Teaser for the Amy Winehouse Documentary

As expected, the teaser for the upcoming Amy Winehouse documentary Amy is painfully dark and somber. As the cryptic echoes of “Back to Black” play in the background, you see and hear throwback footage of Winehouse sharing her recording dreams.

The film, directed by Asif Kapadia, recounts some of the thrills and anguish in Winehouse’s life, including her notable battle with drugs and alcohol before her death in 2011. Interviews and rare tracks, included. Watching the brief trailer above, it’s hard not to get wistful hearing Winehouse prophetically push back against fame. “I don’t think I’m gonna be at all famous. I don’t think I could handle it,” she says. “I would probably go mad.”

The footage I’ve seen of Winehouse in the studio looks like some of the saddest recording sessions ever. What I’m really hoping for is deeper insight into her creative process. She says in this clip, “I wouldn’t write anything unless it was directly personal to me just ‘cause I wouldn’t be able to tell the story right… I’m not a girl trying to be a star or trying to be anything other than a musician.”

Amy will play in theaters in Britain starting on July 3. A U.S. release date is pending.
