In a Law and Order SVU episode come to life, a woman who adopted three daughters in the U.K. but desperately wanted a fourth convinced one of her teenage daughters to artificially inseminate herself and become pregnant so that she could have the child. The mother manipulated her daughter into inseminating herself in her bedroom with syringes of semen purchased online from a sperm bank in Denmark. Beginning at age 14, the girl inseminated herself seven times over the course of two years until she finally became pregnant at the age of 16.
It wasn’t until some midwives noticed the mother refused to let her teenage daughter breastfeed the child for fear that it would become too attached to her that the case was reported to authorities.
The young girl, who was home schooled along with her sisters, was manipulated by her mother’s “exceptionally forceful personality” into inseminating herself out of love for her adoptive mother, and according to the case reports, the daughter even sent her a Mother’s Day card in 2009 with a picture of a positive pregnancy test, a gift the teenage girl hoped to deliver her. High Court Judge Peter Jackson was shocked by the case, noting that he felt “an abiding sense of disbelief that a parent could behave in such a wicked and selfish way towards a vulnerable child.” Wicked and selfish indeed.
The adoptive mother was sentenced with imprisonment for child cruelty.
