Elizabeth Warren and AOC Also Hated That Game of Thrones Finale
PoliticsI know exactly one person who liked the Game of Thrones series finale, and she is incorrect. Everyone else I know, myself included, thought it was straight trash, including, apparently, Elizabeth Warren and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. I would be comfortable with either ruling the Iron Throne, had (spoiler alert, but watch the fucking finale already, it’s Tuesday) Drogon not gone ahead and burned the damn thing up.
This morning, Warren and AOC posted a Twitter video lamenting showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss’s decision to rip power from Westeros’s women at the last minute, sticking a stoned teen boy atop the power structure instead of allotting that leadership to one of the many badass ladies we’ve been set up to root for since the series premiere. It was depressing to watch Benioff and Weiss literally crush Cersei, drive Daenerys insane, put Arya on a ship, and limit Sansa to sub-leadership in the cold part of town while letting men still run shit, something they repeatedly proved they were not good at doing. It sounds…almost like real life! And real life sucks!
Anyway, Warren and AOC were bummed:
AOC: “I’m sad. Disappointed about it.”
WARREN: “I was just really…meh.”
AOC: “I feel like we were getting so close to having this ending with just women running the world, and then the last two episodes…”
WARREN: “Exactly. And then one goes crazy .”
AOC: “It’s like, oh, they’re too emotional.”
WARREN: “Exactly. Can’t do that.”
They both pointed out GoT’s infamous dearth of women writers and directors—the show has only had two women writers and one women director in its eight-year-run, zero of which were employed during the final season, hence, probably, why this season’s women characters either went murder-crazy or thanked their rapists. “It’s like, ugh, this was written by men!” AOC said. “I was disappointed. We need to get some feminist analysis up in HBO.”
Warren’s not the only presidential hopeful who wants to strangle Benioff and Weiss. Gillibrand said this week that she was disappointed with the show blowing up Daenerys’s character. “[W]hy did the writers have to turn her into a mad queen?” Gillibrand asked, per NowThisNews. “They just in the last three episodes decided to destroy who she was and why she wanted to ascend to power. I thought it was cheap and I was very unhappy.”
It’s unclear where the other candidates stand on Daenerys’s murder spree, but I get the sense Joe Biden would have pulled hard for Edmure Tully.
