The CDC is trying to develop a natural insect repellent made from nootkatone, a chemical found in citrus fruit and Alaska yellow cedar trees. Nootkatone safe enough to drink, and totally prevented mosquito bites in one test. It also may be effective against ticks, bed bugs, and head lice, but there’s one problem: It currently costs $4,000 per kilogram.
