Apparently, elementary school teacher Jennifer Carnley has a Tinder profile, and is using a photo of her kindergarten class as her profile picture. This definitely seems like something that she could have done in poor taste — but given how invasive and confusing Tinder can be, it could also be an accident.
Allow me to explain. When you sign up for Tinder, the app asks if it can access your Facebook profile, and then when you click yes (what choice do you have?), it displays EVERYTHING from it, including your friends list, that “about me” section that you haven’t changed in five years, and all of your available profile pictures, which takes some figuring out in how to curate them for the Tinder-verse.
Tinder probably works that way for a reason — it certainly cuts down on the time and stress of figuring out how to misleadingly present yourself to strangers for the purposes of casual sex, but the way it reaches in and then spits your “personal information” back out can be jarring. Also, I have a friend (really, a friend) who recently moved cities, and spent an hour trying to figure out how to update the Tinder version of her Facebook so that it actually reflected her current location and content.
This is all to say that I feel for Ms. Carnley. It’s completely plausible that she accidentally linked her kindergarten class’s Facebook page to her Tinder (perhaps she was still logged in on her phone as such), or if she uses that picture as her Facebook default (weird, but not unheard of — how many parents put up default photos of their underaged children on social media?), then she didn’t realize that it came up as her Tinder default as well, or didn’t know how to change it before the rest of the world caught sight.
Thanks so much for making Internet-facilitated hookups easy, Tinder.
