Lena Dunham's Book Gets a Cover and a Release Date

Though her proposal and potential cover was leaked to Gawker over a year ago, Lena Dunham’s book now has an official release date – October 7, 2014 – and an official cover.

The cover for Not That Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She’s “Learned” looks a lot like something you’d have seen in the 1960s or 70s, or maybe even a bit later; it’s certainly a little less complicatedly retro than original proposal cover art we saw. The focus on font and style harkens back to a Phillip Roth-style cover, while the colors bear a similarity to an early version of Gloria Steinem’s Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions or Nora Ephron’s first cover for Wallflower at the Orgy. Which is to say, it’s a nice throwback.

That design inspiration has been confirmed by Elizabeth Olson, the designer of the cover who appears to be working on the book. She posted a photo to Instagram a few weeks ago with the caption “book design inspiration for a freelance project (also a collection of favorite books i own),” which Dunham replied to with “Um… :):):) <3 <3." Update: Dunham confirmed via Twitter that the cover itself was designed by Teddy Blanks of the studio CHIPS. Blanks is responsible for the logo used on those Deborah Lippman limited edition Girls nail polishes and he worked on Tiny Furniture with Dunham as well.
