Melania Trump Does 1 Thing in New Doc Trailer: Wear Black Sunglasses
The First Lady is once again lending her image to try and glamourwash an administration gutting reproductive rights and civil liberties.

When Melania Trump announced her “memoir,” Melania, in July 2024, we all asked, “Why?” But then the book was released in October—one month before Election Day—and we learned it was because she wrote that she supports abortion rights. Trump and the GOP spent much of the 2024 campaign trying to distance themselves from their draconian abortion bans, so Melania’s “life story” was clearly used as an election-year Hail Mary to convince Americans—particularly women—to vote for Trump regardless of all the GOP‘s anti-abortion rhetoric staring everyone in the face.
Trump obviously got elected. So the question today is: Why is Amazon releasing a documentary about Melania directed by Brett Ratner—yes, that Brett Ratner? Is Jeff Bezos trying to outbid Netflix for Warner Bros? Does the administration hope Melania will give Republicans a bump in the midterms? Is she just so over her husband that she wanted an official recording of her disdain? Whatever the answer, it seems like Melania is, once again, lending herself as a glossy, high-fashion sheen to try and glamourwash all the administration’s atrocities.
The one-minute trailer, released on Wednesday, opens with Melania telling the camera (wearing that insane giant hat), “Here we go again,” before walking out for her husband’s second inauguration. The rest is essentially a montage of her doing one thing: wearing black sunglasses. She wears them in an elevator, on a private jet, strutting across a tarmac, and hurriedly walking down a back hall. There’s even a shot of her putting on black sunglasses in a gilded mirror. I half-expected a Trump Jr.-backed ad for a Melania-in-Black-Sunglasses memecoin to flash across the screen.
There’s also a zoomed-in shot of her black, stilletoed boot stepping out of a limo, like she’s Villanelle— the fictional, stylish sociopath and international assassin in Killing Eve. Unfortunately, I’d be super into this trailer if it were a fictional HBO show about a cosmopolitan female contract killer who was assigned to become First Lady of the United States (think Netflix’s Black Doves), instead of a documentary about the fully complicit wife of the current president of the United States who isn’t even a full year into his second term and whose administration is setting the Constitution on fire on the daily.
The trailer ends with Melania picking up her cell and saying, “Hi, Mr. President, congratulations,” to which her husband responds, “Did you watch it?” We don’t know what Melania was meant to be watching, but she replies, “I did not, yeah, I will see it on the news.” Unfortunately, while I believe she’s as implicated as anyone in the horrors of this administration, it is iconic how annoyed and bothered she constantly seems by him.
However, like Melania, I will not be watching whatever the fuck this documentary is…but it was nice for a moment to imagine a universe where this White House hell is merely a Jessica Chastain political thriller and not our literal living nightmare.
