Trailer for HBO's The Case Against Adnan Syed Promises a 'New Chapter' 

In 2014, Adnan Syed became a household name thanks to the podcast Serial, in which journalist Sara Koenig examined the circumstances of his conviction for the 1999 murder of his then-girlfriend Hae Min Lee. Now, HBO has released a trailer for its four-part docu-series, The Case Against Adnan Syed, which hinges on the hope that America still cares about true crime the way it did five long years ago.

Fans of the podcast will be happy to see the trailer open with Rabia Chaudry, an attorney and childhood friend of Syed’s who played a prominent role in the original Serial. However, its creators insist the new series will have plenty of fresh ground to cover, since the podcast and its attendant popularity kicked up such fervor that Syed’s case is in the process of being re-litigated.

“I know there are things that don’t look good for me,” Syed says, though he’s got to admit, things certainly look better for him now than they would have had Koenig and her tape recorder never come along.

One party who is most certainly not happy about the continued exposure of Syed’s case is Lee’s family, who said the new trial “reopened wounds few can imagine.”
