The Year’s Most Elaborate—and Confounding—Celebrity Halloween Costumes

It's probably a hell of a lot easier to settle on a costume when you have an entire hair and makeup department at your disposal.

It was an extra-long weekend of celebrities spamming our Instagram feeds with their multiple Halloween costumes—many of which looked extremely expensive. Many of them also orchestrated elaborate photoshoots, reinforcing my suspicions that, unless they’re going to the Casamigos or Heidi Klum Halloween parties, celebrities’ getups are, in general, not for actual Halloween festivities. And in that case, who are we, the plebeian masses, to ignore the creative sartorial entertainment they put on for us?

For your gawking pleasure, here are some of our favorite (and least favorite) celebrities and what they did this year with their oodles of money.

Megan Thee Stallion as a Gremlin

Obsessed with her; obsessed with whatever this is (and also whatever this is).

Lucy Dacus & Julien Baker as Pete Davidson & Ariana Grande

If I were famous, I would have simply thrown away my own costume after seeing this.

Heidi Klum as (part of) a peacock

Was this Heidi Klum’s largest-cast Halloween costume yet? Yes. Was it her best? In my opinion, no! (Her 2018 Fiona costume is my personal favorite.)

And here’s Heidi and her husband, Tom Kaulitz of Tokio Hotel, who went as...an egg?

Florence Pugh as Guy Fieri

As someone who has been muttering for months about the state of her hair, I am so pleased to see it being put to good use.

Hailey Bieber as Scary Movie

Clearly just an excuse for her to dress in lingerie (cue Mean Girls quote) but I guess if I had abs like hers, I’d do the same.

Kerry Washington as Sha’Carri Richardson

Sha’Carri has faced some absolutely insane media attention in her running career, and Kerry Washington’s tribute warmed my little heart. Plus, it’s so good!! She can really rock the red.

Janelle Monae as a chameleon

This is some Heidi-Klum-level dedication...and since Heidi just wore a velvet bodysuit, Janelle out Heidi-ed Ms. Klum herself.

Kate Beckinsale as Barbarella

This is pretty good, I applaud it.

Kourtney Kardashian as Kim Kardashian

It’s unclear if Kourtney did this to mock her or pay tribute to her (the two still appear to be feuding about whatever it is they feud about—I think wedding themes??)... But if it’s the former, she gets a chuckle and a high-five from me.

Christina Aguilera as Cher

This was very good!!!!

Ice Spice as Betty Boop

Fun! Cute! Happy for her!

Demi Lovato as Snow White

In a world of celebs doing the most, I appreciate it when they look like they grabbed something from the local Spirit Halloween—even if it was from the premium rack!—and had a friend use a phone flashlight to light their photo.

Kendall Jenner as Wonder Woman

I don’t really understand why she felt the need to recreate the iconic Lynda Carter scene, but maybe the answer is just because she can?

Kendall and Kylie Jenner

These are their costumes for “sugar and spice”...?? OK?? Kylie honestly just looks like sexy Rufio. In any case, I’m relieved we didn’t get another photoshoot in the vein of the needless “Planet Kylie” alien kidnapping situation we got last year.

Savannah Guthrie as Taylor Swift on tour

Excellent gemwork on the “Cruel Summer” bodysuit. I give it 8 out of 10 “I’m drunk in the back of the car”s.

Channing Tatum and Zoë Kravitz as Rosemary and her baby

Minimal effort for maximum pay-off! Great job! (And congrats?!)

Kaia Gerber and Austin Butler as Edie Sedgewick and Andy Warhol.

Interesting choice for a couple’s costume. Anyway, these two are still going strong it seems!

Dylan Mulvaney as Romy from Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion

Wonderful! No notes.

Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly as Kill Bill: Volume 1

Amid the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, SAG asked members not to dress up as anything promoting a current film project, and in the Instagram she posted of this look, Megan tagged SAG-AFTRA. But Kill Bill:Volume 1 is from 2003, not 2023 or even 2022, so it’s unclear what the snark is about here...

Keke Palmer as Tyra Banks in LifeSize

Clever! Cute!

Mariah Carey as Jessica Rabbit

I appreciate Mariah finding a way to wear red the last day before the official holiday season.

Kelsea Ballerini as Barbie

We needed at least one celeb to go all-out with Barbie, and I think Kelsea Ballerini (notably, not a SAG member!) was the perfect person to do that.

NBA star Victor Wembanyama as Slenderman

Terrifying and hilarious, the winning Halloween combo.

One more Heidi for the road.
