Undaunted by the heartbreaking failures of recent fan-based conventions, Hello Kitty Con is moving forward. The convention is scheduled for Oct. 30 – Nov. 2 at the Geffen Contemporary at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Downtown Los Angeles. According to USA Today, event coordinators plan on making it a massive affair:
The four-day event will feature panels, workshops, special guests, exhibits and lots of shopping, where attendees can get their hands on exclusive and vintage merchandise. Among the offerings is the poster seen here, available to attendees for $25.
The convention is timed to Hello Kitty’s 40th anniversary, and it takes place…in L.A.’s Little Tokyo neighborhood. The Line has already signed on to be the con’s “official” hotel, offering Hello Kitty-themed rooms and even HK-themed dishes on the room-service menu.
Since Hello Kitty Con is sponsored by a real, live actual company and not just a few stoned Tumblr users so instead of being a glorious shitshow, it’s probably got a good chance at being a fun convention if you’re up for that sort of thing. I for one would kill to get a crack at the vintage Hello Kitty goods being promised in the video above. Because while my mom swears I simply lost my adorable Hello Kitty clutch purse, I’m sure she tossed into a pile of stuff destined for a Goodwill store somewhere in South Florida.
