If she were easy to please she simply wouldn’t be Cher. The legendary multi-hyphenate made headlines this summer when she gave rather faint praise of the upcoming Broadway jukebox musical about her life, The Cher Show, during previews in Chicago at the time.
“Some parts of it are really fabulous. We’re going to work on the other parts,” she told Chicago Tribune. “In many parts, it was much, much better than I thought it would be. And there were no parts where I wanted to gouge my eyes out.”
“It needs work,” she added. “I’m not supposed to say that, but I don’t care.”
That’s the spirit! Fuck ’em! Fuck ’em all!
Then, in an interview with Elle published earlier this month, Cher said the initial script for the project, which was pitched to her more than 10 years ago, was “terrible.”
“I’m fussy ’cause it’s my story,” she said. “I want it to be honest and right and funny and sad, like my life.”
Again in a just-published profile, The Washington Post checks in with Cher about her current thoughts on the musical, which will debut Monday on Broadway. Is it up to muster yet? Mmmmmmnot quite.
“I have to tell you something. I think the cast is so talented,” Cher told the Post. “When I see them doing me and people that I’ve lived with and known, I’m astonished. I think the work they’re doing on it—as a play—I think it’s improving. I don’t think it’s soup yet, but it’s on its way.”
It just goes to show that perfection isn’t born, it’s made—sometimes by saying no.
