When I was a kid, I wanted my name to be Anastasia Shortcake because I really liked the name “Anastasia” and I had a mad obsession with Strawberry Shortcake and also I was a complete idiot. I begged my mother to let me change my name, but after she finished drinking her afternoon peach schnapps and stopped laughing at me, she calmly explained to me that no, I was stuck with my name.
Too bad I didn’t have access to better legal representation. Melanie Ann Convery and Neal James Coughli defied conventional wisdom and probably their moms and petitioned a court in Massachusetts to legally change their names to Seamonster. Yes, they are living out the dreams of an 11-year-old you. Via Mashable:
Melanie Ann Convery and Neal James Coughli officially changed their names to Melanie Seamonster Convery and Neal Seamonster Coughli on Thursday; the couple’s initial appeal went viral after it was published in their local paper last week.

Judge Barbara M. Hyland of the Hampden Probate and Family Court legally approved the request on Thursday, making the name change official, the court confirmed to Mashable.
Convery was a little taken aback by all of the attention the name changed got. (It made People. My life’s dream is to be in People.) The couple has declined interview requests so far, so we don’t really know why they made the change.
But who cares; the Internet has decided they are awesome for doing so and that’s that. Unless there’s some sinister reason behind the name change. Could they be possibly courting the favor of impending sea monster invaders? Only time will tell.
