Demi Lovato Releases New Video Supporting Marriage Equality

In Depth

Demi Lovato, currently a singer and former child star for Barney and Friends and various Disney Channel productions, recently made headlines for coming out in support of LGBT rights. Now, she has produced a new video for the Human Rights Campaign.

Lovato, a self-described devout Christian who views LGBT+ identities as spiritually equal, uses the video to express her own views of how extended marriage equality will strengthen the institution of marriage.

Let’s protect love and strengthen the institution of marriage by allowing loving, caring and committed same-sex couples to legally marry.

The actress and singer has previously played a lesbian character on the series Glee, and served as the Grand Marshal of the 2014 Los Angeles Pride Parade. She has also said that she has a very personal connection to the issue of gay rights because her grandfather was gay, and came out at the very beginning of the gay rights movement:

I’ve never spoken about this before, but my grandfather himself was a trailblazer. He was brave enough to come out in the 1960s, and I feel a lot of my spirit has come from him. He passed away a few years later and I only wish he could have been able to see all the progress that has been made.
