Madonna Wears Literally Many Hats as a Spy in the Teaser for Upcoming Album Madame X

Madonna hasn’t released a new album since 2015’s Rebel Heart (she’s been pretty busy being Madonna, in the meantime) but that ends soon. How soon? Whom can say, but soon enough that the upcoming album has a name—Madame X—and a video teaser.

From the look of the teaser, which you can watch above, and which sounds like it includes a snippet of a track, Madame X will be a conceptual album of sorts, maybe? Apparently, Madame X herself is “a secret agent traveling around the world, changing identity, fighting for freedom, and bringing light to dark places.” She is a “a dancer, a professor, a head of state, a housekeeper, an equestrian, a prisoner, a student, a mother, a child, a teacher, a nun, a singer, a saint, a whore,’ and ‘a spy in the house of love,’ which is a lot of (literal) hats to wear, and also an eyepatch.

Last year, Madonna told Vogue Italia she was working on new music influenced by a year she spent in Lisbon. “I’ve just met lots of really amazing musicians, and I’ve ended up working with a lot of these musicians on my new record, so Lisbon has influenced my music and my work,” she said, according to Entertainment Weekly. “I don’t see how I could have gone through that year without being informed by all this input of culture.”

Anyway, I spent many lovely childhood hours playing Where in the U.S.A. is Carmen San Diego? on my parents’ Dell with Like a Prayer on in the background, and therefore I consider myself fully prepared for this album. No release date yet, unfortunately.
